Episode 117: Can You Receive Love If You Don’t Love Yourself? The Heart Chakra for Parents

Don’t you just love watching your four-year-old come out of their room in the outfit they put together? That open, lit-up heart is what this week’s heart chakra episode is all about.

My daughter used to wear a bucket hat, rain boots, and a tutu, and act like she was the most glamorous person on earth. Not a care in the world about what anybody else thought.

And of course, she came home with friends. These little people connect heart to heart. They see that energy, that effervescence, and they’re drawn to it.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could live from our hearts like that now, as parents?

Showing up as your true self

When we put the real version of ourselves out there, without the filter of what we think people want to see, we raise our energy and connect with our true spirit. And our kids are watching. So when we live authentically, we show them how.

It isn’t always easy. If you’re a highly sensitive or neurodiverse parent, or you’ve been hurt before, those old wounds can make it hard to show up as you. And as we shed the layers and raise our vibration, some friendships may shift. Like energy attracts like energy, and the right people will find you.

I recently started wearing my Spiritual Parent Podcast shirt to school pickup, and a teacher asked me, “What does spirituality mean to you?” It opened the most beautiful heart-to-heart conversation, all because I stopped hiding something so big in my life.

The heart chakra: giving and receiving love

This episode continues our chakra series with the heart chakra, our fourth chakra. It’s often associated with the color green, and it’s all about relationships, self-love, and understanding ourselves.

Here’s what blew my mind: if we don’t love ourselves, we can’t receive love.

As parents, we’re giving, giving, giving. But when are we receiving? Our kids don’t always show love the way we expect, especially highly sensitive or neurodiverse kiddos. In our house, we talk about how love looks different ways. For example, a meal I make is love. And a picture, a hug, or a “thank you” while looking me in the eyes is love they’re giving me.

What we see in others lives in us

When something in someone bugs us, it’s often a reflection of ourselves. But the beautiful flip side? When you see something wonderful in someone, like their ambition or their patience, it’s because it’s in you, too.

Don’t forget your partner

It’s so easy to fall into “you do this, I’ll do that” with our partners: the cooking, the pickups, the finances. Instead, keep stoking the energy in the relationship that started your whole family. Your kids feel it, and you are worth it.

Try this affirmation

Right hand on your heart, left hand on your stomach:

“Thank you, universe, for showing me how to receive love, allowing me to have these moments and opportunities in my life where I can give and receive love. Thank you for showing me this parenting journey. And so it is.”

Keep listening

Spirit to spirit, I see you, parents. Thank you for coming along on this journey.
