Nobody tells you a diagnosis can feel like grief. Even when the label helps. Even when you’re relieved to finally have answers.
About two weeks after my kids’ diagnoses, I cried. My husband adjusted so quickly, and I didn’t understand why it hit me so hard. Now I believe our spirit knows before our body does, and our body needs time to catch up.
If you’re in that place right now, this episode is for you. You are not doing anything wrong.
The guided meditation for this episode
Ready to move this energy up and out? Episode 111 is an eleven-minute guided meditation made just for this, so you can release the resistance and give your inner child a voice.
In this episode
- Why a diagnosis can bring up grief, and the stages of resistance we move through
- Letting go of the “Pinterest picture” of what we thought parenting would look like
- A real example from my own early days of nursing and tongue-tie
- The pros and cons of labels: how they help with schools, therapists and insurance, and why I use them with professionals but not right now with my kids
- Growing up being told to tone down my own sensitivity
- When people say “but they seem so normal,” and what masking can look like
- Grounding, roses and bubbles, and a heart-and-belly affirmation to close
Try this: ground, then release
When the grief or resistance shows up, ground yourself first. Picture a cord running from the base of your spine all the way down into the earth.
Then put whatever you’re holding into a rose or a bubble and let it float away. Hand on your heart, hand on your belly, and breathe.
When you’re ready to go deeper, Episode 111 is a full guided meditation made just for this.
“We are not resisting what we thought parenting was going to be. We are changing the picture.”
